October 1976: ARTFORUM
Looking through old archives I came across this old edition of Art Forum and this particular article 'The Apotheosis of Crummy Space' seems as relevant today as it was back in 1976.
The works shown in the derelict public school 1(later renamed Project Space 1)in the article below needed to be robust, responding to the building in order to survive. Pushing the manner in which the artists worked and becoming a catalogue of current ideas. Perceptions changed at this time from the emphasis on the glistening finished aesthetic to the relationship between the object and its placement, an inseparable combination.
What drew me to this article is the manner in which artists used the building itself to create work that maintained their identity. Reconstructing, amending and adding to what they had found generating an afterlife for the space which is still functioning today.
